This presentation will focus on the current status of telecommuting in medium to large organisations in Australia. A case study (from Telstra, who operate the largest corporate telecommuting project to date) will be used to illustrate the factors which are contributing to the growth of telecommuting, and those which are holding it back. Using extracts from the recent Goanna Communications publication "Telecommuting Australia - A Business and Market Analysis" possible future scenarios for telecommuting will be examined, together with the policy initiatives that will be required to realise them.

Australia has also been a leader in the development of rural networks, telecottages and televillages. While the uptake of telecommuting in Australia has been slow, the move from employment to the independent contractor/teleworker has been significant. In parallel with this, there has been a rapid acceptance of the creation of rural telecentres (telecottages) to bring IT skills and training to the smaller communities. Australia now has close to 100 telecentres operating, most of them government funded.
